Sounds of the Americans

web project

Sounds of the Americans is an experiment in sound and photography using the contents of Robert Frank‘s photo book, The Americans, as a foundation for exploration.

Each of the book’s 83 images were converted audio using specialized software then fed back into an audio spectrograph application which renders the original photograph in a highly altered form.

The audio tracks are the result of converting the photographs to sound via computer software outlined below. Similarly, the images have been created by loading the sounds into a spectrograph application which allows one to recreate the original photographs in a highly altered form.

While many of the photograph’s details are obscured to the point of being lost, the layer of audio allows the viewer/listener to experience the work in an entirely new manner, perhaps leading to different interpretations and unintended meanings.
